Meat Drops: Nourishment with Purpose

One of the most tangible ways Zambeze Delta Safaris supports its surrounding communities is through the distribution of fresh, protein-rich meat. Each hunting season, more than 30 tons of venison and buffalo meat are harvested and delivered to families across the villages bordering Coutada 11.

The significance of this cannot be overstated. Protein is a vital but often scarce resource in rural Mozambique, where communities face limited access to reliable food supplies. A single buffalo taken during a safari can provide nourishment to hundreds of people. Families that might otherwise go weeks without protein are sustained by these contributions.

But the meat drops are not just about food security they are a cornerstone of our conservation model. By ensuring that local communities share directly in the benefits of regulated hunting, we remove the incentive for subsistence poaching. Villagers no longer need to set snares or hunt illegally for food because they know their protein needs will be met through ethical, sustainable harvests. The result is a win-win situation: wildlife populations remain stable, and communities remain nourished.

Perhaps most exciting is that this project is on track to become entirely self-sufficient, a model of empowerment where conservation and livelihood go hand in hand.

Fishing for Food and Trade

During the dry season, ZDS supports a community fishing program targeting the abundant Barbel catfish in the delta. This initiative is carefully licensed and logistically supported to ensure it is sustainable. The program not only provides another reliable protein source but also allows families to sell excess fish, creating opportunities for trade and income.

Education and Healthcare

Investing in the next generation and in health has also been a priority. To date, ZDS has built a three-classroom school and three teacher’s houses, providing a stable foundation for education in the area. On the healthcare front, a community clinic and a newly built doctor’s house ensure that vital services are available locally, dramatically improving the quality of life for many.

Agriculture for the Future

Agriculture is the most recent frontier of our community work. By assisting local farmers with ploughing, supplying fertilizer, and providing seed, ZDS is helping transform traditional farming practices. The long-term goal is to move away from the destructive “slash-and-burn” methods historically used in the area and replace them with sustainable farming that preserves the soil, increases yields, and reduces deforestation.
