Giants of the Upper Zambeze

Few creatures command as much respect as the Nile crocodile. Ancient, powerful, and perfectly adapted to its watery domain, these apex predators embody both danger and awe. In the upper Zambeze, where the river bends wide and deep, crocodiles grow to astonishing sizes some of the largest anywhere in Africa.

It was in these waters that one of the most remarkable crocodiles ever recorded was taken. Measuring an incredible 18 feet, this giant stood out not just for its size, but for the lifetime of encounters it likely had with people and wildlife along the river. Guided by master croc guide Graham Cawood, the hunt was carried out with patience and precision. Needless to say, this part of the river is now a safer place.

A Region Under Threat

This region of the Zambezi River in Mozambique loses many fishermen, their wives, and their children to crocs every year. As Anton Davison explains, it is said that crocodiles eat over 360 people on the Zambeze River alone each year that’s one person per day. And even those numbers, in his estimation, are very conservative.

With water being a critical life source and the luxury of pumped water not always possible many local fishermen and their wives use this river for washing, fishing, and collecting water. For them, the threat of crocodiles is not abstract; it is a daily reality.

A Record-Breaking Crocodile

This legendary crocodile has been submitted and is pending a Roland Award as the Number One Crocodile, a testament to its extraordinary size and significance. For hunters and conservationists alike, the award symbolizes not only an extraordinary achievement but also the incredible potential of the Zambezi system to sustain thriving populations of these giants.

Human-Wildlife Conflict

Human-wildlife conflict is one of the greatest challenges in unfenced Africa. When a true man-eater like this is removed, the local communities celebrate not just for the safety it brings, but for the reassurance that their daily lives at the river’s edge may continue with less fear.

Conservation Through Sustainable Hunting

Zambeze Delta Safaris remains committed to a model where ethical hunting and conservation work hand in hand. Every hunt is carefully managed to ensure the long-term health of the species, while also bringing tangible benefits to local communities.

The upper Zambeze continues to be one of the finest crocodile hunting destinations in the world. For those seeking an encounter with one of Africa’s most formidable predators, this is where legends are made and where the spirit of adventure meets the legacy of conservation.
